what should my 2 year be doing (academically?)?
hes only just turned 2 and the main thing worrying me is hes seems unable to do jigsaws. when i say jigsaws i mean the baby ones where you match a picture to its shape and insert! he seems to be able to do shapesorters but could be a fluke and doesnt have a very good one!
his nephew was doing floor puzzles at this age but my son cant do baby ones?
he doesnt show that much interest which may be down to me not stting down and doing them but surely its a basic skill to match a picture to a shape even when theres a picture in the shape to match it??
he also knws no colours or numbers! he is starting to mimic me when counting though and many people ask him colours and numbers (i think they think he knows!) which im hoping will help!
Your son sounds very normal. He is still a baby and each month will bring wonderful changes.
I taught my son sign language at 8 months. He learned to speak with his hands by 10 months and was fully capable of communication through sign language between 12-14 months.
My son still has trouble with colors and numbers and only know a couple of letters. He is now 2.5yrs and has only been potty trained for 2 weeks.
Listen, don’t worry about it. At 24 months, this isn’t a basic skill. I have taught my son many things and he is very smart. He still hasn’t mastered the things you have listed, but he will.

He’s totally normal. You work on these things at this age, but most kids dont really grasp them until closer to, or during the third year.
Puzzles are typically a 4+ year old thing- even the super large and easy ones. Younger children may develop that skill sooner, but thats not a sign that yours is remedial, not by any means.
Matching is something that usually comes in the third year as well,
Counting and colors again, all things we WORK on at this age (thats why people ask- because most kids find it interesting, they dont expect him to know) but they dont fully grasp it until later. It would be quite a thing in deed for a 2 year old to count to five at 24-26 months.
He’s fine. Just play those games with him and he will learn as he grows.

You said yourself, you haven’t sat down and doing them with him. He’s not going to automatically know how to do all these things. You have to be stimulating him all the time at this age, sit and do the puzzle boards with him. Point at colours and say "this is a blue car" and "this is a green car" I’m continually talking about cars when my son is in the buggy. We’ll go for a walk and talk about the cars, and colours. He’s not going to just pick up everything by himself.

Buy flash cards; alphabet letters, numbers, shapes and colors. Work with him daily on these. After he does well, with the flash cards, then mix them up. Children always learn the alphabet in order – mix them up and most do not know what letter it is…..
Take him to your local library and get him ‘turned onto books’. Each library has a ‘children’s section’ and they can help you find ‘age appropriate’ books for him. Read to him daily and right before he goes to bed.
The puzzles are good – but – he needs much more than that.
Remember, the more you do for him (educationally) now…the easier it will be for him when he begins school.
