Why do people think that the coast of south america fits into the coast of africa like a jigsaw puzzle?

August 19, 2009 - 9:12 pm 10 Comments

I mean, come on. If forces powerful enough to draw two continents (and indeed the entire world) apart like that and separate them by thousands of miles, do you honestly think the shorelines would maintain their original shape? If they do keep their shape after such movements, why the hell doesn’t california fit snugly into russia like a good san fran sicko would.
KTDykes, my point is, if africa and south america match up, why are they the ONLY coastlines that match up. All coast lines should match up, not just 5% of the shorelines
KTDykes – the similarity of the coastlines is coincidence. Why does the state of Michigan look like a Mitten? Is it because there is a state somewhere else that is shaped like a matching hand? Why does the state of florida look like a limp penis? Is this proof that there is another landform on the other side of the globe shaped like a vagina?

Because Alfred Wegener was a really kick-ass geologist, no matter how wrong he was.

He smoked a pipe.

August 17, 2009 - 7:36 pm 1 Comment

Do nucleus found in the same place within different types of cells? support your answer.

Skin cells seem fit together like pieces of jigsaw puzzle. How is such an arrangement helpful to an organism?

Do all cells have cell mebrane?

..please i need it now…tnx..

1. No not always. Some cells don’t even have a nucleus, e.g. erythrocytes (red blood cells).

2. So that it can act as a barrier to pathogens.

3. Yes, all cells need to excrete/absorb.

How the States Got Their Shapes

August 16, 2009 - 5:26 am No Comments

Why does West Virginia have a finger creeping up the side of Pennsylvania? Why are California and Texas so large when so many of the states in the Midwest are roughly the same size and shape? Why are Alabama and Mississippi almost exact mirror images of each other?

Mark Stein provided answers to these questions, and many more, when he discussed and signed his new book, “How the States Got Their Shapes,” in a program sponsored by the Center for the Book. The author used the Library’s Geography and Map Division and other Library resources in his research.

The map of the United States is so familiar that its state borders seem as much a part of nature as mountains and rivers, Stein says. “How the States Got Their Shapes” is the first book to explain why state lines are where they are. Anecdotal in nature, the guide reveals the moments in American history that put the giant jigsaw puzzle of the nation together.

Speaker Biography: Mark Stein is a playwright and screenwriter. His plays have been performed off-Broadway and at theaters around the country. His films include “Housesitter” with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. He has taught writing and drama at American University and Catholic University and lives in Washington, D.C.

What type of person/personality will he grow up to be/have? My 3yr old son eats his waffles row by row.?

August 11, 2009 - 11:12 pm 11 Comments

He also likes to put things in a perfect line, such as instead of playing with toy cars, he’d line them up in a row like train carts. When playing with blocks he’d rather make a big rectangle out of it. He knew his ABCs, numbers, colors, shapes, and 24p jigsaw puzzle by 2. A very hard headed, stubborn boy, very resistent to change. I’m curious if any of you parents had a child like that and how did they turn out to be when they get older?
I don’t think he has Aspergers. He is somewhat shy, but he plays with his brother, laughing, chasing, etc. He also communicates very well.
He displayed all this before he was potty trained at about 3.
Oh I forgot to mention. He used to have a tantrum when his banana breaks, or chips his crackers or cookies. He’d rather not eat them. He is now much better only does that sometimes.

It’s way too early to tell if anything is "wrong" with him, in terms of minor social tendencies like being a control freak. For those mentioning Autism and Aspergers- you would KNOW if your child was living with either situation. Your doctor would have caught it by now because there are so many signs that have nothing to do with what the average person who saw "Rain Man" thinks about autism.

It’s just his personality, just one of the ways he’s experimenting and relating with his world. Most children express some kind of control things- wanting their toys "just so," not liking their crackers broken, etc. Parents only worry when their kids are different from them. If you ate your waffles in rows (which I do, by the way) you wouldn’t even think twice about his behavior. There are probably some "controlling" things you do that you don’t even notice, and wouldn’t care if your child emulated. Just because you don’t share this one doesn’t mean he’s not normal. Maybe YOU’RE not normal, because, like I said, I eat my waffles in rows. =)

Relax, and let him be him. He may spend the rest of his life eating waffles row by row, but is that really going to affect anyone??
